Dulux Spill Response Simulated Scenario - June 2006

Dulux Spill Response Simulated Scenario - June 2006

Scenario:
An employee “accidentally” drove a forklift into a 1,000L ammonia IBC piercing the container, spilling the contents, releasing toxic ammonia fumes.  The forklift driver activated the alarm and made the 111 call.  Five staff members were injured as a result.

Outcome:
The site was evacuated and the Spill Coordinator took charge.  During roll call it was discovered that five people were missing.

The NZ Fire Service arrived and entered the site wearing full PPE.  The five injured staff were found by the NZ Fire Service, removed from the area and treated for inhalation exposure and other minor injuries.

NZ Fire Service officers cordoned off the spill area and set up the decontamination unit.  Spilt ammonia was recovered using absorbent material, which was later disposed of.

Decontamination of the NZ Fire Service officers was undertaken and once the NZ Fire Service Chief cleared the scene, the Spill Coordinator authorised staff to re-enter the site.

Overall:
A successful emergency response completed by the staff from Dulux NZ, Lower Hutt and the New Zealand Fire Service.
