Regular practicing of emergency scenarios helps businesses to ensure they have trained, coordinated and appropriate responses to likely emergencies. In 2009 Dulux instigated training for a first aid incident, confined space and a full site evacuation.
The objective was to test Dulux confined space entry and rescue procedures. An injured contractor was required to be rescued from a confined space (process vessel). The contractor was not able to remove himself from the vessel under his own ability and was experiencing stress factors. Dulux rescue procedure was required to be actioned by the standby person. First aiders and trained confined space staff were called to the incident to attend. A full site evacuation was also triggered.
Staff reacted quickly to the call for assistance and emergency procedures were actioned. First aiders and trained confined space staff assessed and managed the situation with additional staff arriving to assist and provide support. The situation was contained and the contractor retrieved.
A debrief was conducted after the event with key learnings and recommendations for improvement identified. Participants dealt with the incident in a prompt and efficient manner. Practicing events such as this provides a valuable training experience for all.
